Inspired by the piece I did named “One O in Poor” for the Canadian Artists for the Poor which features a circle, a 0, a hole. Zero is nothing, no quantity or number; naught; the figure 0.
I use false hair (a female idiom) to create the Zero as it is to this gender that education is denied.
This piece’s constructed was similar to “Can’t Touch” with the exception of the alpha matte used to create a curved page leaf for that piece. Here the pages are laid flat so the hair can form it’s Zero. The hair is mounted into a brass hinge with a zipper mounted on top.
The pages have had the text burnt out and distress with a torch. Some text ghosts through from the back side of the pages and other choice words have remained legible.
Zero is shipped ready to hang. Artist signature and details are hand printed on the back. Caring for this piece is simple dusting. Encaustic does not respond well to extreme fluctuations in temperature – Do not freeze or leave in a hot vehicle.
